Fishing Tips

The type of fly we have tied onto our line will determine whether we are best to cast upstream or downstream. If we have a fly that requires a drag-free drift to imitate an insect that is being carried along by the current, then we need to cast upstream. If we chose a fly that needs to swing across the current to imitate a small fish, then we will cast downstream.

The big question is 'which fly is best to tie on in these conditions?' So we have a few more questions - are the fish rising to the surface and if so, what are they rising to? If you can see then go to your tackle box and find the closest fly to tie on. Are they feeding on something on the surface? Can we determine what it is? Are they feeding on something beneath the surface? Are they feeding on something close to the surface? Is it part of the fish breaking the surface because they are feeding close to the surface or are they feeding on insects on the surface? If there are bubbles in the rings of a rise, the chances are the fish is feeding from the surface. When fish feed below the surface, the rise is usually silent. When they feed at the surface there is usually a noise. This range of questions will help you to determine what the fish is feeding on and hence what the best fly to use will be...
