Trout Fishing

When you are trout fishing and there are no trout rising and you are unsure what the trout are feeding on you are facing a common challenge. In this situation you need to get the fly close to the bottom. If the water is more than half a meter deep, you will need to weight the fly to get it down there.

Creatures that the trout feed on close to the bottom will be a brownish or greenish colour and will drift along freely with the current. Cast upstream in the ripples on a shortish line, about 5 to 6 meters. As the nymph drifts downstream, gather the line in with the line hand, to keep slack to a minimum. Keep a close watch on the end of the line, if the end of the line stops or pulls under, or the indicator disappears lift the rod tip immediately as a trout may have taken the nymph.

Keep moving along the water endeavouring to keep the fly near the bottom. Cast to the water systematically not in random starting close to the bank and moving further out a meter or so. Take a couple of steps upstream and repeat the process...
